Oncological operations (cancer surgery) represent a most significant component of the range of operations performed at the BHI.

This branch of surgery includes, among others, operations for colorectal, gastric, esophageal, pancreatic and hepatic tumors. The latter, pancreatic and hepatic operations, are currently viewed as the greatest challenge in the entire field of surgery.

At present, these operations are considered to be a measure of quality, and the immediate outcome (recovery from surgery) serves as well-established parameter of surgical standards and quality of perioperative care – anesthesia, intensive care, supervision and monitoring, nursing care, etc.

Hundreds of highly complex pancreatic operations have been performed at the HMC during the last decade, with a mortality rate lower than 1%, less than the rate reported for the leading centers of oncological surgery.

These operations have finally “smashed” the myth that “major operations” cannot be performed at a private medical institution. It turned out that not only major operations, but also the most complex and complicated ones, can indeed be performed with excellent high quality outcomes.

Oncological operations also include surgical treatments of gastric cancer, esophageal cancer, as well as colorectal tumors. Many hundreds of such operations are performed at the BHI annually, with similar excellent outcomes, as demonstrated by low rates of mortality and perioperative complications.

The field of oncological surgery also includes a unique group of abdominal sarcoma tumors. These tumors are enormous, requiring complex surgical procedures for excision of the tumor and the adjoining organs. In this field too, BHI and its highly qualified oncological surgeons have become the leading medical center.

Needless to say, the oncological surgery performed at BHI includes breast operations, plastic surgery for breast reconstruction, and excisions of melanoma lesions and other skin tumors.
